<p>
Description:
</p>
<p>
Modules are
smaller elements within the Joomla! structure, used to display retrieved database data, information items, or interactive
features throughout a Joomla! web site.
</p>
<p>
There are two types of Module:
</p>
<ul>
<li><i><b>Site Modules</b></i> - These are used to provide functionality for the Front-end of the web site.</li>
<li><i><b>Administrator Modules</b></i> - These are used to provide functionality for the Back-end of the web site.</li>
</ul>
<p>
The main characteristics of the Modules in both instances are
determined by pre-established positions, set within Site and Administrator
templates. Each Module also has its own configurable settings that are accessible via either the Site, or Administrator,
<b>Module Manager=><i>module_name</i></b>.
</p>
<p>
Examples of
Modules that can be developed are Menus, Login Forms, and Search forms.
</p>
<p>
Joomla! is installed with a number of Modules, please see the Related Information section below for details.
</p>
<h2>Creating new Modules</h2>
<p>
Simple HTML Modules can be
created directly within the Module Manager using the Custom User
Module. For more complex functions the Modules will need to be
developed externally and then installed via the appropriate Module
Manager.
</p>
<p>
Further details on creating Modules for Joomla! visit the Joomla! Developers Portal <a href="http://dev.joomla.org/" title="Joomla! Developer Portal">http://dev.joomla.org</a> where you will also find the Developer Documentation Work Group.
</p>
<h2>Third Party Modules</h2>
<p>
There are literally hundreds of Modules (over 600 @ Jan 2007) - along
with Components, Mambots, and templates - already
programmed for Joomla! These have been written by various Joomla!
community members. You will find them on the Joomla! Extensions
Directory, <a href="http://extensions.joomla.org/">http://extensions.joomla.org</a> .
</p>
<p>
Generally these are free and available for download. There are also
some of the more specialised Modules that are available Commercially
for a charge.

<h2>Description:</h2>
<p>
Plugins are essentially code snippets
or mini-programs which, when called via various parameters, either activate a program,
a script, or perform a specific function upon a Component or the database. These actions are invariably undertaken <u>before</u> any output is made to an appropriate Module for display either in the Front-end or the Back-end of the web site.
</p>
<p>
They can be as simple as a
function that inserts typed text as code upon clicking a button, for example the <b><i>insert image</i></b> button that enters the code in to a Content Item, to fully fledged Third Party libraries for example, the TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor.
</p>
<p>
There are in essence two types of Mambot
- those that are critical to the functionality of the core program of Joomla! and others
that add extended/optional functionality to core or Third Party programs.
</p>
<p>
Plugins are divided into 5 types, or categories, that may be displayed by filtering in the filter field:
</p>
<ul>
<li><i><b>content </b></i>- these Plugins act upon, or add to, the functionality of Content elements of the Joomla! CMS.
</li>
<li><i><b>editors </b></i>-
these Plugins are quite substantial extensions in their own right that
add significantly to the functions available within Joomla! - typical
examples would include the TinyMCE WYSIWYG and No WYSIWYG text editors.</li>
<li><i><b>editors-xtd </b></i>- these Plugins extend the functionality of the editors that are installed within Joomla! </li>
<li><b><i>search </i></b>-
These Mambot add the search functionality to specific areas of the
Joomla! CMS. For example, Content, Sections, and Contacts, amongst
others. </li>
<li><i><b>system</b></i> - these Plugins
are essential to the operation of various functions within the Core
Joomla! CMS. They can rarely be accessed or edited as other Plugins can
be and therefore control over Publishing and Unpublishing and even
installation, are not made available within the Administrator Back-end.
</li>
</ul>
